Alcohol Awareness Month

The month of April is National Alcohol Awareness Month.  Alcohol Awareness Month provides an opportunity to gain more understanding of how individuals struggle with alcohol abuse, offers help for those who are affected and highlights the serious health issues caused by alcohol.

Alcohol Awareness Month was established in 1987 by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.  The idea was to help communities reach out to the public and provide answers to end the stigma and to help understand the causes and treatment available for one of the nation’s biggest health issues.

Alcohol addiction claims thousands of lives across the country each year.  Some notable statistics include:

·         More than 65 million Americans report binge drinking or heavy drinking in a one-month period, which is more than 40% of those who drink alcohol.

·         Teen alcohol use kills 4,300 people each year, more than all illegal drugs combined.

·         In 2019, there were 10,142 alcohol related driving fatalities, totaling 28% of all traffic fatalities for the year.

By making people more aware of alcohol related problems and solutions, alcohol awareness month aims to reduce the pain and suffering alcohol abuse causes to people’s lives.
